Interview with TRAFIK
-Tell us a bit about yourself, what is your background?
- I grew in the soil fertilised by street art, graffiti and hip hop culture, leading my life by exploring alternative DIY lifestyle, testing various boundaries, nurturing creative expression in an urban environment and creating something out of nothing.
-Looks like you are quite obsessed about cars, what fascinates you about this motive?
- I can’t characterise myself as a car fan and see cars as a symbol of modern life, showing us how humans create relationships with objects. I’m deeply immersed in urban lifestyle and see everything from infrastructure to everyday objects as an interconnected man-made nature where cars might seem like live creatures riding through streets. This relationship also reminds the fact that pets usually resemble their masters and I think that through cars we can explore human condition and distinct features of ourselves.
- How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?
- I maintain a flat, rough, geometric style with textures of the urban landscape that give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, vibrating lines or spatial deformation. Usually there are no people in my works as I tend to explore the human condition by concentrating on objects, surroundings and atmosphere of everyday life, finding points of contrast, paradox or playfulness in it.
- How does your usual day and creative process look like?
- My artistic practise involves long walks around the city catching somewhat transcendental experiences of urban landscape and lifestyle. Sometimes I leave artworks in the streets for people to enjoy or take it with them for free as a partisan advertisement and as my contribution to the creative process of experimenting, connecting to my audience and sharing art with others in an easy way. I also like to experiment with paints and techniques with real materials that I have never worked with, e.g. painting with a brush installed on a drill.
- What inspires your ideas?
- My ideas are inspired by everyday life, human expression, jokes, movies, fun facts and car fans.
- What are your other interests in life despite art?
- Listening to rap music, DJing and skateboarding.
- Tell a bit about your current work or any recent project.
- Currently I’m creating auto-portraits – commissioned digital artworks and murals.
- Can you share any of your plans for the future?
- I’m planning to hire an assistant.
- And finally, what is your favorite type of car?
- Though ACAB (All Cars Are Beautiful), my fav type of cars are all old school boxy Volvo’s.
