A nine-dimensional space in which civilization opens up opportunities for further development, either in one direction or another. Conscious grasp of the materiality of war – being-beyond-ego (lt. būtis-anapus-ego), which insists on its transcendence, flows through works of seemingly almost unmasked content. Moral engagement, aesthetic imagination and sounds of empirical analysis – a vital nucleus that unites all works presented in the collection. A line separating the two historical directions of civilizations; a civilization that participates in a global polylogue and culturally gravitates towards pluriverse, and one that isolates itself by universalizing and creating a one-dimensional culture – the simulacra of Pусская цивилизация (en. Russian civilization). Contemporary creators are demanding from themselves a universally intelligible symbol language that would have purely empirical (social and emotional) consequences, they defend their position in the intellectual field in the face of ongoing crisis. While participating in the communicative scope of united global historical experience, an inverse line is drawn, which erases the redistribution of "alien" and "own".
In the global discourse, representatives of culture unite together for Western values, the point of intersection of which are the colors of blue and yellow, becoming a symbol of peace, democracy, dialog. Not the introduction of one's own riches of the spirit, but a clear conversation in which one seeks provocations to reconsider what it means to be a creator in the face of war in Ukraine.
The art-book and exhibition project Draw the Line by illustration gallery Hungry Eyes is a curated collection of works by international illustrators created during the first weeks of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. Artists community from around the world actively created a huge variety of works to support Ukraine in a visual way. These works are just some of them, forming a silent narrative and representing the ideas ranging from criticism of Russia and putin’s regime, propaganda and disinformation, war brutality and documentation of the war reality in Ukraine to encouragement messages and support for Ukrainians.
After more than a month of ongoing war, the most awful state is losing the empathy, interest and energy in supporting Ukraine. This publication and exhibition of illustrations is another attempt to say – keep on keeping on, do not normalize the war, draw that line.
Ukraine still needs the support from all of us, all funds raised from sales of this book and art-prints auction will be donated to Blue-Yellow, Lithuanian fundraiser supporting Ukrainian military since 2014.
